Greetings to my fellow Leadership Memphis Alumni,

As this year’s vice chair of the Alumni Committee, I am excited to serve in this capacity as we increase our efforts to enhance our programs through the LM web site. I share this excitement with the chair of the Alumni Committee, Tag Graham.

These enhancements are made possible through the dedication and cooperation of many talented individuals that want to help lead our city to greatness. We have expanded the capabilities of our Alumni program to allow opportunities for all to become engaged in leading our city.

This section is designed to engage LM Alumni who have a passion to serve in our community. This section is appropriately known as, Community Impact. We currently have 4 existing programs for alumni to choose from. They are as follows: Common Ground, Adult Mentoring, Financial Education and Talent Recruitment & Retention.

Common Ground – is an initiative that brings together diverse groups of community residents to discuss race relations. Over a period of weeks, small groups meet with a trained facilitator that leads the group in an in-depth, curriculum-based discussion on race. Participants of the program have an open forum to listen and freely share their thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions. As a result, they learn more about themselves and others, building trust within our communities and developing relationships across racial divides. Each Common Ground semester ends with individuals and groups committing to take action - where talk turns into measurable actions. Common Ground needs you. We need a diverse group of volunteer facilitators and participants.

Adult Mentoring – Did you have a mentor growing up? A teacher, coach, neighbor, or another adult who made a difference in your life? The Grizzlies Foundation started the Team Up Mentoring Initiative because of mounting evidence that mentoring helps young people to stay in school, aspire to higher achievement, further their education, develop self-esteem and a more positive vision for their own lives. Leadership Memphis alumni can help mentor in a number of different ways, but most importantly by providing young people with support, guidance, friendship, encouragement and a constructive example. The Grizzlies Foundation has over 30 different mentoring programs you can choose from – and you can check with them to determine which one best fits your schedule based on different time commitments, locations, and needs. You can even visit, or tour a mentoring site prior to signing up in order to make sure there is a good fit. Contact the Grizzlies Foundation to get involved with mentoring a child, or partnering with a young adult who is willing to learn. Thanks to John Jackson EP’07 and Jeff Gaudino EP’08 for serving as co-chairs for Leadership Memphis on this initiative.

Financial Education – An initiative that allows LM Alumni the opportunity to work with neighborhoods, non-profits agencies, businesses, and faith-based groups to assist in the development of financial educational trainings. This would include Earned Income Tax Credit and Predatory Lending workshops. Directing this impact area for Leadership Memphis is Corky Neal.

Talent Recruitment & Retention – This effort allows LM Alumni the opportunity to develop a talent recruitment & retention initiative. Directing this impact area is Gwyn Fisher, Darryl Jackson and Chantal Veevaete.

We hope these impact areas will allow each of you the opportunity to serve this community, either as an individual or as a class. If you are interested in participating in one or several of these impact areas, please contact myself or the director of the specific Community Impact area. If you have other ideas for programs that you would like to present, please let us know!
