Program Overview
The Grassroots Program is designed to improve the effectiveness of grassroots leaders in Memphis. Participants are empowered with basic leadership skills and develop techniques to effectively implement community change. The quality and depth of the curriculum results in short and long-term benefits to individual communities and to the larger Memphis community.
Program Participants
The Grassroots Program targets leaders who are on the frontlines of community change. Each class is a strong cross-section of the community, including representatives from neighborhood groups, international communities, multi-cultural associations, PTAs/ PTOs, or other community organizations.
Grassroots Program Goals
- Train grassroots leaders in 10 basic skills essential to outstanding leadership: integrity, vision/strategy, communication, relationships, persuasion, adaptability, teamwork, coaching & development, decision-making, and planning
- Community IQ - expand leaders’ knowledge about Memphis
- Teach grassroots leaders how to apply what they know to make Memphis better.
Leadership Memphis Overview
Leadership Memphis is a non-profit, community leadership development organization. Its mission is to empower the community to step up and make Memphis great. Leadership Memphis is dedicated to helping the city fulfill its potential by advancing the values of diversity, connectivity and inclusion, and leveraging the power of collaborative action. Founded in 1977 as The Memphis Institute of Public Responsibility, the organization has trained and graduated more than 2,000 leaders from its signature programs: Executive, FastTrack and Grassroots. Its Action Initiatives are Memphis Talent Dividend/Graduate Memphis, Imagine Memphis and SUCCESS High Schools.
Strategic Programmatic Goals Leadership Memphis builds all programming around three strategic goals:
- Advance diversity and inclusivity
- Increase collaborative and innovative leadership
- Promote civic engagement that makes a difference
Tentative Schedule
The Grassroots Program is class days are approximately 40 hours conducted in 11 sessions from October 2013 to March 2014. Participants are expected to attend all sessions and activities. The Opening and Closing Advances are mandatory. Each participant may miss no more than one 2.5 hour session. Participants will also engage in an additional 4 – 6 hours of community activities.

Saturday, March 8th - 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, March 22nd - 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Closing and Commitment)
The schedule above is intended to give potential members a chance to better understand the time commitment of being in the class. All dates are subject to change.

To be considered for the Grassroots Program, you must complete an application packet online at www.leadershipmemphis.org or you can get a copy at the Leadership Memphis office. The packet includes:

Tuition Policy
Tuition for Leadership Memphis’ Grassroots Program is $100 and includes programming, materials, and refreshments.
We recognize that many companies, organizations and individuals have different fiscal years, budgeting processes, and cash flow demands. Our financial arrangements are flexible and customizable according to individual needs. Tuition or a payment plan is required prior to your final acceptance in the class.
We must have your full tuition or extended payment plan by Friday, September 27, 2013. Tuition must be paid in full before graduation. Tuition is non-refundable.
Leadership Memphis has a very limited amount of scholarship funding available. Please contact the
Leadership Memphis office for more information.
