In Their Own Words...

Leadership Memphis graduated its first FastTrack Class in the spring of 2008. These individuals represented many diverse backgrounds and professions, yet their enthusiasm for Memphis and for Leadership Memphis was constant. The quotes below captured some of the class members’ impressions of the program:

“Leadership Memphis FastTrack has taught me that I can make a difference. It has taught me that ignorance is not bliss and the more you know, the better person you will be. It has taught me that it is easy to sit around and complain about the problems... it is totally different to figure out solutions and make them happen. It has taught me that we are a very diverse community and that learning more about that diversity only brings us all closer. Leadership Memphis FastTrack has made me a better person, a more well-rounded person.”

“Leadership Memphis made me look at Memphis closer. I am looking at myself differently. I ask more often: “What can I do to help?” “What can I do to make it better?” No matter our backgrounds, racial barriers, or economic structure, we all want the same outcome. We want what is best for our families and our community. We want to live in a place that we are proud of. We want to trust our city government. We want a sound and safe public school system. I want to make Memphis a great city for all people and Leadership Memphis has given me a fire to that.”

“The FastTrack experience has deepened my feelings of hopefulness for the future of Memphis. To see this diverse group of talented, enthused, engaged and above all optimistic Memphians giving of their time and energy to learn, listen, and lead has been a powerful contradiction to the daily stream of negativity and cynicism that seems to define our city to many.”

“It’s great to sit next to other intelligent, motivated people of different races, genders, and backgrounds who speak passionately about what matters to them. I have not only broadened my perspective, but I have also seen how much we have in common in terms of the bright future we all want.”

“We all had permission to hope...to dream big.”
